TTSH, ASUS build new AI tool for quick diagnosis of blood disorders

The two institutions partnered to speed up AI solutions for clinical treatment.

A new AI-powered tool was created to enhance the diagnosis of blood abnormalities amongst patients, which will address labor-intensive procedures for the detection of blood disorders.

In a statement, Singapore-based hospital, Tan Tock Seng Hospital, and technology firm, ASUS, teamed up to build Blade, an automated tool for blood cell identification.

Through analysing digitised blood films, Blade will flag any critical blood films such as leukaemia, which can allow early clinical treatment.

Blade will also be used to cut overall blood film review duration by 50% to improve laboratory productivity and health outcomes for patients.

“A large dataset of 337,700 digital images of peripheral blood cells was used to develop the AI-powered software through deep learning and computer vision, with a white blood cell classification accuracy of 91.4%,” read a joint statement.

Currently, TTSH and other collaborative sites are evaluating the AI tool. Blade is also under clinical trials and is being planned for regulatory approval.

Aside from this, the two firms inked a strategic partnership for speedy integration of AI-powered solutions into critical care to boost Singapore’s healthcare transformation.
