India to account for 18% of APAC's surgical sutures market

GlobalData finds risks in traditional suturing techniques for India.

As minimal access surgeries (MAS) have gained importance, GlobalData said its success in India relies on efficient suturing techniques that are vital to minimise complications and infections.

The global analytics firm said India will account for about 18% of APAC's surgical sutures market, by revenue, in 2023.

Ayshi Ganguly, Medical Devices Analyst at GlobalData, said, “Traditional suturing techniques in India often involve using metal clips, plasters, and bandages. However, such techniques are known to pose risks due to poor sterilization and cause unwanted reactions in patients."

"Furthermore, limited number of skilled practitioners and poor access to healthcare in rural areas have been additional drawbacks. This drives the requirement of alternative suturing techniques that can reduce the complications associated with traditional sutures,” added Ganguly.

Surgical sutures have efficiently sealed wounds and incisions by securely holding the tissue together, lowering the risk of infection and minimizing scarring, making them an effective tool in MAS. Ethicon Inc, Arthrex Inc, and Covidien Holding Inc are examples of key players in this surgical sutures market.
