Australia to establish Northern Heart Centre in Tasmania

The $80m (A$120m) centre will include a second catheterisation lab and a dedicated cardiology ward.

Australia is set to establish a new centre focused on cardiovascular diseases at the Launceston General Hospital in Tasmania.

The $80m (A$120m) Northern Heart Centre will include a second catheterisation lab and the establishment of a dedicated cardiology ward featuring a day unit and expanded echo and stress testing capacity at the hospital.

“Heart disease is more prevalent in Tasmania than anywhere in Australia, and it is our state’s biggest single cause of death,” Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Guy Barnett, said.

“The Northern Heart Centre is a key part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, and we will continue to invest in the capital works Tasmania’s health system needs, right across the State," Barnett added.

In line with this, the government is also developing a 10-year state-wide cardiac strategy led by the Tasmanian Cardiac Network.
