Union Hospital bags Patient Care Initiative Award

Union's one-of-a-kind app forces a path in delivering medical information with a few clicks.

Hong Kong's Union Hospital (UH) bagged the Patient Care Initiative of the Year Award in the recently concluded Healthcare Asia Awards 2019.

It took home the prize thanks to its Patient Portal Application, which enables patients to register online and have instant access to hospital information.

The application incorporates a patient-centric concept and the cloud technology, and optimises traditional hospital work. It is compatible with multiple devices, easy to understand and safe and reliable to use.

The Patient Portal features an online registration channel for patients, a Medical Administration Module for carers which is linked to the electronic prescription from the doctor after consultation, and a Drug Recognition Mobile Application for patients and/or carers.

Released in 2017, this move fosters patient empowerment, which, as UH believes, shapes the delivery of healthcare.

According to the awardee, reliable medication information, personalised medication list and medication reminder features not only motivate medication adherence and compliance, but also invovles patients in their own health and health care, leading them to ultimately have better health outcomes in the long run.

The application's design has passed both the design Apple App Store and Google Play Store review process.

Boasting its usability, patient details entered will auto-populate into appropriate data fields; therefore, staff only need to verify information upon the arrival of the patient. At the same time, patients can monitor their queue status via Patient Portal and plan their arrival accordingly.

The application also allows users to carry out an array of tasks that previously had to be completed either via phone or in person, which cuts manual hospital work short.

With more time in their hands, medical staff can instead focus on improving and enhancing the quality of the hospital's care.

Additionally, the application also features a Medication Reminder and Drug Information Library (MedCheck) module, where patients can set self-reminders with pre-set fixed-time intervals for their medications. By simply scanning the 2D barcode on the drug label of their medications, patients will never forget to take their necessary treatments.
