State support boosts Japan's assisted reproductive tech market

The country has the largest market for such devices used for addressing infertility.

A growing awareness and government support have been boosting the use of assisted reproductive technology (ART) or procedures used to address infertility in Japan, which is expected to grow at a CAGR of 2.1% from 2020 to 2030, according to GlobalData.

Japan is the largest market for ART devices in the Asia-Pacific region in 2020 and is expected to remain the same through 2030. Despite the declining population in Japan, the number of ART procedures continues to rise.

The report noted that a growing unmarried rate, late marriages and delayed family expansion plans, and married couples choosing to have fewer children are some of the key factors resulting in low fertility rate in Japan.

With this, the continued population decline is making the government enact family-friendly policies and subsidise female reproductive health methods. These are, in part, driving the ART devices market in Japan.

“Providing mandatory health insurance coverage of ART treatment, increasing access to treatment and educating people on the options available is expected to improve the fertility rate and drive the ART devices market further during the forecast period,” GlobalData’s medical devices analyst Pratibha Thammanabhatla said.
