The Medical City's President and CEO, Dr. Eugenio Ramos, wins CEO of the Year Award; TMC Clark bags two awards
After undergoing an arduous transformative process, The Medical City (TMC) has reason to celebrate after bagging three accolades at the Healthcare Asia Awards.
TMC Clark bagged the Marketing Initiative and Primary Care Provider of the Year Awards, whilst the Main Facility in the heart of the metropolis snagged the coveted CEO of the
Year Award. This is another testament to the hospital’s commitment to its value proposition, “Where Patients are Partners.”
CEO of the Year
Lauded for his naturally endowed leadership skills and his ability to foster, encourage, and inspire his medical community, Dr. Eugenio Jose F. Ramos, President and CEO of The Medical City (TMC) Main, took home the CEO of the Year Award in the recently concluded Health Care Asia Awards 2019.
Ramos assumed the position of President and CEO of TMC Main in September 2018 after being President and CEO of TMC Iloilo since 2013.
Only a few months in office, Ramos has already broken down silos in the hospital, which was one of the institution’s major challenges as it grew over the span of 51 years.
To solve this problem, the CEO championed the importance of human connections and conversations that spur new potentials for innovation and organizational growth not only in TMC Main but across the TMC Enterprise.
He encouraged huddles among team members and across departments, including himself, to give members of the TMC community the opportunity to share new insights, fresh perspectives, and reservations they may experience. As soon as he took on the presidency of TMC Enterprise he formed his core team of leaders and managers with eyes on growing and integrating the potentials of the TMC Enterprise which consists of six hospitals and 50 ambulatory clinics.
These huddles are an excellent chance for members of the community to help each other in accomplishing tasks that may require extra support, whilst shedding light on accountability and providing an occasion for consistent recognition, support, and direction.
His leadership has torn down barriers between departments and units as well as bosses and subordinates. Additionally, the CEO also started to remove policies, processes, and procedures that do not yield the desired results.
Apart from encouraging strong community ties, Ramos also introduced a matrix organizational structure, which is mainly applied in large projects or product development processes. This new structure warrants quicker interdisciplinary response and adaptation and facilitates a horizontal flow of skills.
A passionate and ingenious leader, Ramos has also introduced several innovations for the benefit of both the patients and all members of the TMC community. In his term, he adapted changes in physical facilities to promote a healing environment.
Ramos opened a garden for patients to relax and rejuvenate during their time at the hospital. Revenue-wise, the CEO also automated business intelligence and improved financial processes.
He also launched the Red Coat Ambassador Program, which is committed to providing the best possible patient experience at TMC Main with the plan of replicating this in the other hospitals of the network. He has also started the challenging task of digital transformation and creation of the Center for Innovation and Lifelong Learning, an online initiative that the staff of the enterprise can access.
To show TMC Main’s care for the environment, Ramos pioneered the war on wastes, among other ecological initiatives --- initially focusing on reduction of paper work, bureaucratic processes, and long and frequent meetings.
“We are committed to reduce waste in TMC. We shall leave our comfort zones, get rid of bad habits, quickly hurdle the inertia to move, and not waste time planning to reduce waste, " Ramos said.
Ramos was the CEO of The Medical City Iloilo from 2013 to 2018. Under his leadership, the hospital has turned into one of the top healthcare providers in the province. With 108 authorized bed capacity, TMC Iloilo registered a 511% growth in revenue from 2010 to 2018.
In Iloilo, Dr. Ramos developed a flat organization that aims to remove bureaucracy and red tape and encourages honest and straightforward communication. This is not seen in any other hospital in Iloilo nor the entire Western Visayas region. This nurtures and brings forward people with great ideas and true leadership potentials and skills which otherwise would go unnoticed.
Marketing Initiative and Primary Care Provider of the Year
Meanwhile, at TMC Clark, doctors and staff have reason to celebrate after the hospital bagged the Marketing Initiative of the Year Award for “Pink Walk: #BreastWalkEver” and the Primary Care of the Year Award for Client Management Program.
Staying true to TMC’s value proposition of treating patients as partners, the Clark facility, in cooperation with Philippine Society of General Surgery and the Philippine College of Surgeons, organised an event for the benefit of breast cancer patients, together with family, relatives, and like-minded advocates.
Aptly named “Pink Walk: #BreastWalkEver” featuring a walkathon, the activity was initiated to create awareness and encourage annual screening for early detection and intervention to prevent further progress of breast diseases, specifically breast cancer, which accounts for approximately 15% of all cancer deaths amongst women worldwide,
according to the WHO.
With the help of influencers, the event gained 19,964 reach and 1,555 total engagements on its social media posts, serving its purpose and mission to be an eye opener of prevention, early detection, and palliative care to condense the stigma of breast cancer in the present era.
Surrounded by a number of industrial companies, TMC Clark also recognised the need for occupational healthcare services to prevent noncommunicable diseases caused by workplace hazards. In line with this, TMC Clark has created a Clinic Management Program to provide total business solutions to the companies needing complete administration of their occupational health. It is a comprehensive program that integrates Occupational Health standards to the company’s goals.
In one of their surveys, TMC Clark found that almost 44% of community doctors in the region have confirmed the need for occupational health, proving that even the primary care doctors from various provinces consider occupational health as the future of sustainable primary care.
TMC Clark is continuously developing marketing efforts and initiatives to promote and to further take forward its Clinical Management Program through awareness, education, customer delight to probe word-of-mouth referral, relationship management and continuity of care, as well as partnership with public institutions.
The Healthcare Asia Awards 2019 was held on May 23, 2019 at the Conrad Centennial Singapore.
