India ranks 2nd in COVID-19 clinical trials

This was attributed to the high number of cases in the country.

India emerged as the country with the second highest number of COVID-19 clinical trials in the world, which has seen 491 trials as of early March, data from GlobalData revealed. It is followed by China with more than 200.

Globally, the US is running the highest number of trials in the world with 823 trials. Rounding out the top five are Iran and Spain, which saw more than 200 each.

GlobalData’s senior analyst Scotty Chung-Siu, MPH, commented that the high number of cases in India and the US allows more patients who could undergo COVID-19 trials. On the other hand, the low number of cases in China provides less opportunity to run trials.

“China has had the slowest increase in the number of COVID-19 clinical trials. The number of active trials in China has slowly increased from 318 to 488 over the course of the pandemic – an almost flat line compared to the US and India,” Chung-Siu said.
