Sri Kota gains recognition for facilities improvement at Healthcare Asia Awards

The project “Better Facilities, Better Care” encapsulates the centre’s commitment to high-quality healthcare services.

Celebrating 20 years of service in 2019 is yet another milestone for Sri Kota Specialist Medical Centre, and its award for Facilities Improvement Initiative of the Year (Malaysia) at the Healthcare Asia Awards 2020 further sweetens that success.

Since it started operations in 1999, the medical centre has become the most accessible and preferred community medical centre in Klang region, Malaysia. It has expressed its commitment to high-quality holistic treatments and healthcare excellence by continuing to upgrade its facilities and services for the benefit of patients.

First, the hospital upgraded its Cancer Centre, which started operations in November 2019. The MYR25m (around US$5.8m) upgrade included an area expansion from 450 sqm to 850 sqm and the acquisition of a new Accuray TomoTherapy machine to provide radiation therapy to at least 16 patients a day. TomoTherapy is an advanced radiation treatment system in which 3D imaging is integrated to deliver image-guided treatment techniques, such as stereotactic radiosurgery, intensity-modulated radiation therapy, and stereotactic body radiotherapy.

These techniques, when combined with image guidance, ensure accurate and precise high-dose radiation to the target, and minimise the damage to the surrounding healthy tissues. The Cancer Centre is also supported by a 160-slice high-end CT system for radiation therapy planning, along with the first and only 3D digital mammography system in Klang.

Meanwhile, Sri Kota’s New Cancer Centre Day Care can now accommodate as many as 6 patients per session for chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and hormonal therapy. All systemic therapy treatment plans are personalised with necessary bio-marker tests to provide the most effective intervention. To complement its highly specialised services, the hospital also opened the Cytotoxic Drug Reconstitution Laboratory for chemotherapy treatment.

Completing the list of Sri Kota’s achievements is the refurbishment of the surgical ward into a modern facility with new furniture and appearance across the entire sixth floor. The upgrading project cost more than MYR2m (US$460,000) and was completed in nearly six months.

As a 232-bed tertiary private hospital, Sri Kota Specialist Medical Centre was established to provide premium medical care. Since 1999, it has seen an increase in the number of resident specialists as well as delivered services in different medical fields. Some of Sri Kota’s key milestones include being the first medical centre in Asia to perform minimally invasive spine surgery, being the first medical centre in Klang to perform coronary artery bypass surgery, and being the first private medical centre in Klang to conduct endoscopic spine surgery.

Sri Kota focuses on heart, spine, and cancer care. It intends to provide affordable, comprehensive, and high-quality specialist healthcare services to the communities it serves, as well as ensure patient safety and satisfaction.

The Healthcare Asia Awards 2020 was held virtually on 14-17 April 2020.
