Thomson Hospital closes complex paediatric care gap
It won the Specialty Hospital of the Year - Malaysia at the Healthcare Asia Awards 2024.
Whilst Malaysia has accelerated in advancing paediatric care, there are still gaps in care to be closed, especially when it comes to meeting the demands of patients with complex cases which are still greatly shouldered by the public sector. Recognising this, Thomson Hospital Kota Damansara actively curated a team comprising a suite of doctors that cover a wide range of healthcare needs in children, leverage each other’s strengths in performing complex surgeries, and offer holistic care.
In the past year, the hospital has expanded its suite of consultants to cover the full range of paediatric needs within a single building. It now hosts general paediatricians, neonatologists, paediatric neurologists, paediatric cardiologists, paediatric endocrinologists, child and adolescent psychiatrists, as well as paediatric surgeons, paediatric neurosurgeons, paediatric orthopaedic surgeons, paediatric ophthalmologists, and paediatric anaesthesiologists.
Thomson Hospital has also performed its first Kasai and Myasthenia surgeries in the past year, a testament to its capacity to meet the needs of underserved paediatric patients. It has also been the first in Southeast Asia to administer Spinraza, a US Food and Drug Administration-approved treatment for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).
Celebrating 30 years of delivering excellent healthcare services this year, the hospital has made great strides in closing the gap in care for children in line with its vision of helping people lead healthier lives by making healthcare accessible, accountable, and sustainable.
“Moving forward, we will continue leveraging the diversity of sub-specialties, together with the strength of nursing and allied health care, as well as optimise the latest technology in helping children with complex healthcare needs live longer and better-quality lives,” said Dr Sivakumaran Jayaraman, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Thomson Hospital Kota Damansara.
Its initiatives become a testament to the company’s pursuit of excellence in championing significant improvements to the quality of life for children battling SMA. This has been lauded at the Healthcare Asia Awards 2024, as Thomson Hospitals bags the Specialty Hospital of the Year - Malaysia category win.
