Takeda Pharmaceuticals Taiwan lauded for Innovative Cancer Care Awareness Campaign with Advocacy Partner, HOPE Foundation for Cancer Care
The company was awarded the Patient Advocacy Program of the Year accolade.
Takeda Pharmaceuticals Taiwan took home the Patient Advocacy Program of the Year award for its successful “Taiwan 555 Challenge”, which aimed to advance advocacy and education in the global fight against cancer.
In collaboration with the HOPE Foundation for Cancer Care, the three-part initiative unified the Taiwanese community in support of World Cancer Day 2023.
In the first part of the campaign, participants took part in a five-kilometre (5K) run around Dapeng Bay to symbolise closing the gap in cancer care inequities worldwide. Takeda employees unable to attend were encouraged to clock 5K of activity in their own time. In just one month, participants of the Taiwan 5K Challenge achieved an impressive collective total of 1185.9 kilometres, which is almost equivalent to the coastline of Taiwan (1566.3km).
The second part involved Takeda Taiwan launching five educational videos featuring healthcare experts debunking cancer myths. Shared widely on social media, the videos aimed to make complex topics in cancer care, such as clinical trials, chemotherapy, and surgery, more accessible for patients and caregivers. The video series reached close to 30,000 people on Facebook, with over 15,000 views. On YouTube, it reached 426,000 people across age groups, with around 35,000 views.
Finally, Takeda Taiwan and HOPE worked together to reinforce the five key tips for cancer prevention: maintaining a balanced diet, keeping a healthy weight, going for regular screening, exercising regularly, and avoiding smoking, drinking, and chewing betel nuts — a known carcinogenic risk in Taiwan.
The Taiwan 555 Challenge, fueled by an innovative mix of activities with clear messaging, exemplified how patient advocacy and community engagement can be effectively combined to make a tangible difference.
Through a combination of live events and digital outreach, the initiative successfully challenged misconceptions, equipped the public with preventive knowledge, and fostered a proactive attitude towards health. In particular, the educational efforts reflect Takeda’s dedication to culturally informed healthcare advocacy where the patient is at the centre of every effort.
