Regency Specialist Hospital wins Neurology Specialty Hospital of the Year at the 2022 Healthcare Asia Awards
The hospital was awarded for being the Best Stroke and Spine Center at the Healthcare Asia Awards.
Since its establishment, Regency Specialist Hospital (RSH) located in the Johor state of Malaysia has been focused on developing its neurology and neurosurgery speciality services. It has conducted numerous brain and spine surgeries since 2011 and had a steady increase in doctor consultations over the years. RSH has since expanded its neurology care team to a total of one neurologist, and two neurosurgeons, with neurology-trained staff nurses alongside a number of ancillary clinical support team members.
The total number of unique patients under neurology and neurosurgery were recorded at 3,600 in 2019. The numbers dwindled during the pandemic but the operations remained strong and robust despite the many challenges faced by the hospital.
Besides, the Regency Neurology & Neurosurgery care team participated in the World Stroke Organisation (WSO) Angels Award to improve outcomes for stroke patients by reducing treatment delays and providing patients with an optimal standard of acute stroke care. The team aims to improve the patient's survival rate and minimise post-stroke disabilities. RSH achieved Gold Award status in Q1 and Q4 of 2020 and Q3 of 2021 as well as Platinum Award status in Q3 of 2020 and Q1, Q2, and Q4 of 2021. The Regency stroke care team has treated more than 180 stroke patients per year since 2020.
Recognising the death toll of stroke patients in Malaysia, RSH strategised and developed into the first stroke-ready private hospital in Johor. The team consists of emergency specialists, neurologist, interventional radiologist, rehabilitation specialist and physiotherapists alongside other clinical support team members providing all treatment options available for stroke patients.
The hospital also conducts regular educational activities for the public and healthcare professionals focusing on raising awareness and enhancing the knowledge of audiences in recognising early signs and symptoms of neurological disorders and emergencies.
In addition, Regency has established its own Diabetes Care Unit in 2021. This has expanded the team’s capability to focus on diabetes stroke risk and drives specialisation of the hospital in the field of non-communicable diseases.
For all these efforts and milestones, the hospital was given the Neurology Specialty Hospital of the Year – Malaysia award in the recently concluded Healthcare Asia Awards, hosted by Healthcare Asia.
The awards programme honours hospitals, clinics and other healthcare providers that have risen above the challenges and made a remarkable impact on their patients most especially amidst the massive disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In giving this award, the judging panel took into consideration the mentioned achievements of the hospital. Particularly, for the number of patients treated under the Neurology and Neurosurgery Discipline, for establishing the Regency Specialist Hospital as a Stroke Ready Hospital, and for the number of patients treated for spine injuries and disorders.
The hospital aims to develop into a one-stop centre that provides comprehensive stroke and spine care for patients with its new hospital block expansion, which is estimated to be completed by Q1 2023.
