Regency Specialist Hospital clinches Healthcare Asia Awards 2021 for Corporate Social Responsibility of the Year (Malaysia)

Their healthcare service extends not just to their patients, but also to the community as well.

Regency Specialist Hospital has been growing in size and scope for the past 12 years. This private hospital in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, which has been serving around 170,000 patients each year, has begun working on a new hospital extension block that will double their existing capacity with additional inpatient beds, clinical services, operating theatres, and medical suites. Upon its completion, Regency will become a 380-bed tertiary hospital with the capacity to expand to 500 beds.

However, size, alone, isn't what the hospital is really passionate about. With its mission to deliver the highest quality care to their patients by empowering and encouraging their staff to work together in the best interest of their patients, Regency's main passion is their patients—and the community their patients surround themselves in.

Regency Specialist Hospital is a firm believer in supporting good causes among the communities. Each year, the hospital organises various CSR activities to contribute to society and play their role as a leader in Johor's healthcare landscape.

Nowhere has this role been given tremendous relevance than in their series of blood donation drives for Malaysia. The Regency team collaborated with Government Hospital HSA and HSI to organise a series of blood donation campaigns to relieve the shortage of blood supply in the country. These campaigns, which happened last May to November 2020, were conducted at various locations of Johor Bahru. Through this event, they successfully raised more than 1,000 pints of blood and was the only private hospital to receive the Certificate of Appreciation from the Malaysian Prime Minister.

Their efforts to promote social responsibility goes beyond the country's borders. In August 2020, Regency Specialist Hospital and Mahkota Medical Centre jointly organised a Virtual Mare Charity Run to raise funds for healthcare workers in Indonesia when personal protective equipment was in shortage. Through this endeavor, Regency successfully raised MYR 15,100 for the frontliners at the National Nursing Association of Indonesia.

According to Regency Specialist Hospital’s CEO Serena Yong: “Our first key focus is close to heart within the healthcare community. We worked closely with the state hospital Hospital Sultanah Aminah and Hospital Sultan Ismail in running a series of blood donation drives and collected more than 1000 pints of blood to increase the blood bank capacity, in view of the emergent COVID-19 cases.”

Aside from this campaign, essential food supplies have been distributed to the lower-income families to provide assistance to the B40 group. Regency supported their children's education with computers for online learning as many are forced to stay at home due to school closure. Moreover, they successfully organised a Johor Bersama Virtual Charity where the proceeds go to the B40 and single mother groups during this difficult period.

Regency also launched in 2020 a Johor Bersama group on Facebook, which focused on helping small businesses and communities to engage, communicate, connect, and help each other through the online platform. A series of virtual health talk events encompassing a wide range of topics such as mental health awareness, chronic diseases management, COVID-19 vaccination was also conducted online.

All these efforts are testament to Regency's aspiration to play their role as the leader within the healthcare industry. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic’s challenges, they never faltered in their mission to serve their patients and their community, thereby earning them Healthcare Asia's Corporate Social Responsibility Award in Malaysia.

“We hope that our initiatives are able to inspire many others including individuals and organizations to also come forward and render their support towards the members of the community, especially during this COVID-19 pandemic,” said Yong. “Together, we will walk through this difficult time and see the light at the end of the tunnel.”

As the world continues to evolve alongside the pandemic's effects—and as patients and their communities are given the help they need—Regency Specialist Hospital will continue to provide high-quality healthcare services that bring together the most competent medical capabilities from within and outside of their hospital.
